About PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychotherapy is both an art and a science, and is not easily summarized. It varies depending on the personalities of the psychologist and patient, and the particular problems you bring forward.
We may be working on treating a specifically diagnosed mental health issue, healing from trauma, enhancing your functioning and empowerment in everyday life, or diving deeper into patterns that keep you from flourishing and reaching your fullest potential.
Many different methods may be used to deal with what you hope to address. Psychotherapy is a collaborative effort between therapist and patient (as well as any others who may be involved in treatment).
Psychotherapy is confidential. This means that the therapist is ethically and legally bound to keep the fact that you are in therapy and our conversations between us. There are a few exceptions to this, which will be discussed, but you can be assured that your privacy is protected.
Psychotherapy also involves keeping clear, healthy boundaries. Contact is limited to communications in our therapy sessions and any phone calls that are necessary for your healing or the business/financial aspect of your work. This is an important aspect of your healing and will be discussed more as needed.
Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, it can often bring up uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. This is considered a normal part of the therapy process. Most find this to be a temporary aspect of therapy and psychotherapy has been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, higher levels of personal empowerment, and significant reductions in feelings of distress.
Online psychotherapy is not appropriate for everyone. Please contact me for a consultation to discuss your particular needs and whether this option is right for you.

What is trauma informed therapy?
All services at Karunā are trauma informed.
This means our clinicians strive to recognize that everyone is impacted by trauma at various points in life and how trauma affects our sense of safety and connection to our world.
Karunā clinicians work from a lens of recognizing that there are many different types of trauma in life and make efforts to create a sense of safety in your work together. This includes fostering a sense of empowerment based in autonomy and choice in your treatment as well as including compassion and support as foundational in therapy.
